Miss Kate
Seeing a person who stutters be able to fluently introduce himself to someone new…listening to a child explain her favourite TV show to a new friend and be understood…having parents of a child who stutters explain that their anxiety around his speech has disappeared…seeing a child with apraxia light up as he says his dog’s name for the first time: these are the moments that push Kate to excel in her life’s passion as a speech-language pathologist. She has almost a decade of experience working with individuals of all ages and supporting them through their communication journeys. She would be honoured to be a part of yours.
About
Kate has always had a special interest in working with children. Her very first word was “baby” and from that moment on, she sought out opportunities to be around the little ones of the world. She grew up working in her community church nursery and then moved on to babysitting, running summer camps, nannying, and working at a dayhome.
Kate’s passion for working with children merged with an interest in phonetics and pushed her toward a career in speech-language pathology. She considers being an SLP one of the main passions of her life (others include lifelong learning, her family, and her corgi).
While Kate primarily serves clients in the Edmonton area, opportunities to work with clients in other provinces may be available upon request as Kate has experience with in person, telehealth, and group treatment. She has experience working with children and families, teens (she thanks her teen clients for providing her with extensive video game and movie knowledge), and adults.
Kate believes in family-centered, play-based, individualized treatment. She feels that therapy should be fun and shouldn’t feel like work; if something is too hard for her client, it is her job to increase her support to make it fun again. Kate knows that we learn best when we are enjoying ourselves and have a positive rapport with our treatment providers, and this is something she works to achieve with all clients.
Kate understands that when she works with a client, she is being added to that individual’s team. Successful treatment means being able to work together to understand an individual’s unique strengths and areas of need and using those strengths to support development.
